Especially if you live in Central Europe, the endless stretches of the French Atlantic coast are incredibly impressive and liberating. A paradise for all surfers and water sports fans, but be careful when swimming: the Atlantic is much colder than the Mediterranean and there are much stronger currents under water and higher waves. The region is also known for its beautiful offshore islands (Île de Ré and Île d’Oléron), spectacular dunes and charming port towns.
La Rochelle is an enchanting port town that invites you to take a mindful walk along the harbor. We also had an adventurous experience in this city in our early 20s: Back then there weren't that many internet platforms with reviews and we didn't have a smartphone, but only had a Lonely Planet with hotel descriptions. But these had apparently not been sufficiently checked, because we had a few disappointments - including the Atlantic coast. We ended up in a hotel with bugs, dirty bed linen and empty alcohol bottles in the room! Unfortunately, we were not yet mature enough to change hotels immediately and so we spent a sleepless night that we will remember.
So today we have some tips for mindful travel:
Before booking accommodation, always read the reviews and pay attention to criteria for sustainable accommodation.
It is better to book a small family-run business, boutique hotel, Airbnb etc. than large chains that are not run sustainably.
Pay attention to the communication of the staff: Is someone available on time? Are questions answered in a friendly manner? Are there good directions (especially often an issue with private accommodation)?
If there are meals: Is the focus on healthy, regional food?
Are the prices justified considering the offer?
How is the room design based on the photos online - modern, inviting, cozy, clean? Are the pictures inviting?
Is attention paid to small details? Are goodies provided? How much love does the staff put into maintenance (this often gives an indication of how management treats employees)?
If all of these and other criteria are very good to excellent, we are calling the place a mindful accommodation. Our inner sun child only feels comfortable in beautiful, safe places and needs these to recharge.
