The finest Christmas markets in Austria: Pure Christmas atmosphere

This week and next week we have thought of a little Christmas special: In recent years we have taken the time to visit several Christmas markets to test mindfulness in those places that represent Christmas and yet often end up in an "apre ski-atmosphere" with commercial kitsch.

There are markets with arts and crafts everywhere, some of them already starting at the beginning of November. But where is the quality of the offer special, sustainable and mindful? And where can you get sustainable and regional food instead of fast food?

• Baden Advent (Lower Austria): Baden is worth a trip just because of its imperial past and the beautiful gardens. The ambience at Christmas time is enchanted by the Gassladvent in Baden's city center.

• Korneuburg Advent (Lower Austria): The main square in Korneuburg with its cozy atmosphere and particularly friendly and committed citizens is just a stone's throw away from Vienna.

• Ruster Adventmeile (BGLD): Probably one of the most beautiful places in Austria, especially during Advent, when you can taste regional wine from the Neusiedler See region instead of over-sweetened punch.

• Mariazeller Advent (STMK): One of our favorite places - if you haven't seen Mariazell during Advent, you just have to go: Maybe with the cute railway, which is a delight for children.

• Birkfelder Christkindlweg (STMK): A wonderful community initiative - In the former Galgenwald, a medieval place of execution - the cruel past is transformed into a place of love, with all visitors decorating the forest and inventing games for children (you are also welcome to contribute).

• Freiheitsplatz Graz (STMK): A new market in Graz that impresses with regional and high-quality food and its beautiful location.

• Burgau Castle (STMK/BGLD): A particularly beautiful arts and crafts market with great Christmas decorations.

• Thalersee - Thal near Graz (STMK): Thal with its small lake impresses with its extraordinary church designed by Ernst Fuchs, in front of which there is a small, cute market.

• Altenmarkter Advent (SBG): If you like things even more original and traditional, we recommend Altenmarkt-Zauchensee - one of the most beautiful Advent markets in Salzburg.

• Advent magic in Bad Kleinkirchheim (K): Christmas in the mountains is always something special, Bad Kleinkirchheim impresses with its particularly high-quality regional food offerings.
